There I was, standing in the middle of my High School’s hallway, jaw on the floor because my idol at the time, the Captain of the Phoenix Coyotes, Shane Doan called to speak to me…
The conversation lasted no more than a minute or two, but what he said to me on that call has left an indelible mark on my life. He told me that when you make a commitment, no matter what it is, you always follow through because your word is what will set you apart from the rest.
After that call, something clicked. The loss of my mother had me feeling lost and emotionally drained, but that simple phone call resonated with me on a level I had never felt before and I began to find clarity and purpose.
Following Shane’s advice, I realized I had made a commitment to my teammates and that they depended on me to show up for them and with my head held high. If not for myself, for my late mother.
Most people tell me that I had every right to feel and act the way I did, but I’ve never been the one to choose the path of least resistance. I want, and still do, to live a life of purpose.
